Here we go

Colombia siempre

So we’re adopting from Colombia. It still seems a little crazy. This thing that we’ve talked about for so long is now here and happening and we’re actively working on paperwork and raising money. It’s still pretty abstract in my mind and I wonder if it will remain that way until I get to see his or her face when they send us a photo. At this point I’m mostly excited about what it will mean for our (current) family and how it could affect M.

I’ve been doing some research on Colombia – its people and history. Reading about the country and looking at photos makes me pretty excited. I’ve only scratched the surface, but I already love the culture. I wonder what our relationship will be like with the country/people of Colombia in the years that follow our child’s arrival. I hope that we’ll be able to bring a lot of their culture into our home.

One thing we’re going to do to promote that idea is learn Spanish. I anticipate it being kind of rough. I’ve had a lot of Spanish in school, but haven’t retained any of it. We’re going to try to learn as a family, so hopefully that will help. We’ve started checking out children’s books in Spanish from the library, so I guess that’s where we’re starting.

As for now we’re trying to finish up a lot of paperwork to get ready for our homestudy. It’s been taking more time than we thought it would, but I guess that’s a common consensus. We’re also looking for new ways to raise money, which is something we’ll probably talk about here on the blog. It seems a daunting task looking at the amount of money that we’ll need to come up with, but we’re trying to trust the Lord and come up with creative solutions. We’ll be putting some things up for sale in an online shop soon. We’ll have some photographs and posters for sale and hopefully more as we come up with new things.

More later.
